Another fighting for life in Geylang food poisoning incident

Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, April 7
SINGAPORE : As the family of the first victim of the Geylang mass food poisoning incident prepare for a funeral, another is keeping a close watch as Noraini Kasim fights for her life at Alexandra Hospital.
The 59—year old who had eaten Indian rojak from the same hawker stall, is now in a coma.
On Monday morning, 57—year—old Madam Aminah Samijo who had been in a coma, died without regaining consciousness after being rushed to the intensive care unit of Changi General Hospital.
The hospital diagnosed the canteen assistant who arrived unconscious, unresponsive and with breathing difficulties, as suffering from Gastroenteritis and septic shock.
The body of Madam Aminah has been handed over to her family at about 12.15pm Tuesday.
Seven family members were at the Singapore General Hospital to claim the body which had undergone an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death.
The dead woman’s son, 23—year—old Salleh Omar told 938Live that Indian rojak was his mother’s favourite dish and she had patronised weekly the popular stall known as Rojak Geylang Serai.
Mr Salleh said it’s too early to say what action the family will take against the stall owner as the family is concentrating on the funeral.
Speaking at the family flat in Eunos Crescent, Madam Aminah’s daughter, Siti, said her mum who will be greatly missed was well—liked and a great cook.
Apart from Mdm Aminah, another member of the family, her younger brother Ahmad Samijo, also came down with food poisoning after eating from the stall last Wednesday.
He managed to recover from the bout through outpatient treatment.
In all, the Health Ministry has received 111 reports of food poisoning linked to the Rojak Geylang Serai stall at the Geylang Serai Temporary Market.
The victims include a 38—year—old housewife, Rosiah Samat who received a special treat of Indian rojak from her husband on Friday.
The mother—to—be who ended up with food poisoning also suffered a miscarriage.
So far 27 people have had to be hospitalised, while the rest received outpatient treatment at various emergency departments for symptoms that includes severe abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Preliminary investigations show the cases to be associated with the food from the stall which has been ordered to be closed after being inspected by the Health Ministry and National Environment Agency (NEA).
The stallholder and his assistant have been told to undergo screening for food borne pathogens at the Communicable Disease Centre while other stalls in the area have undergone a hygiene inspection.
The precautionary measure by the NEA has found that the other food stalls are satisfactory and stallholders were reminded to keep up a high standard of food and personal hygiene.
Members of the public who have queries can call MOH at 1800—225—4122.

Best fried Hokkien or prawn mee
The place is Tampines Street 82 and is located in the one and only kopi shop at st. 82. Hawker name is Ah Lye....wait when I visit there will take some pics and post here ok. The price is S$3 per plate and it comes with sambal ikan bilis. The chu char in the same kopi shop is excellent and price reasonable.Got sea food too so no need to go to Newton where the price is 3 times more.
Newton prawn hawker suspended

THE verdict is in: Stall No 43 at Newton Hawker Centre overcharged a band of American tourists who ate there last Saturday night.
Now, Tanglin Best BBQ Seafood will pay the price: It must shut down for three months from April 1, and the worker who served the Americans cannot work there for one year. For more click here

Expensive tiger prawns at Newton hawker center
Tourists (from left) Sal Rubio, Dewi Rigby and Michael Rigby claim they were fleeced by a Newton food centre stall on Saturday. They paid $491 for a seafood dinner for six. -- ST PHOTO: MUGILAN RAJASEGERAN.For full story click here.
The part that irks me was when questioned about the bill the hawker
"Seconds later, the man returned with four others, who he said looked to be in their 40s and well-built". Was the hawker trying to intimidate the tourists? Rough tactics should NOT be condoned in Singapore. S'pore Police Force should take note of this mafia typed approach.
It's sad that Mr.Rigby the American who comes here regularly told his newbie friends "how safe, clean and honest this island city was" and got .....
The above reminds me of the durian scam in Geylang where people had been overcharged.
I wonder how many cases of overcharging went unreported.
Mr. Rigby don't be so naivee because there are cheats in every country and S'pore is no exception.
Here is another case of complaint of overcharging

Cafeela at jalan Kayu

Yummy Ramen from Japan

Ramen is a noodle soup that was originally imported to Japan from China in the Meiji Period. In more recent decades, it has become a very popular dish in Japan, adapted to the Japanese taste. Ramen restaurants (ramen ya) number in the thousands, and instant ramen (invented in 1958) is popular both in and outside of Japan.
Ramen noodles are about as thin as spaghetti and are served in a soup that varies based on region, city and even specific vendor. Ramen's popularity stems in part from the fact that it is so inexpensive and widely available, making it an ideal option for budget travelers. In addition to freshly prepared ramen at ramen ya, supermarkets and convenience stores offer a large selection of instant ramen bowls.
Though ramen can be considered a one dish meal, gyoza are a common side dish offered at ramen ya. These Chinese style, pan fried dumplings are eaten with a soya and vinegar sauce. Shichimi (red chili mix) is usually available on the table to be added according to taste.
Ramen can be classified according to its soup base. The most popular ones are:
Shoyu Ramen: Brown, transparent, soya sauce based soup
Miso Ramen: Brown, non-transparent, miso based soup.
Shio Ramen: Transparent, salt based soup.
Tonkotsu Ramen: White, milky, pork based soup.
Ramen can also be named according to its ingredients. For example, chashumen is a ramen dish that features barbecued pork as toppings

Char Siew roast Pork and Shrimp dumpling soup
The stall is next to the Yishun bus interchange ( blk 924) and the chef is a Hong Konger. The char siew, roast belly pork, shrimp dumpling soup and roast duck are all very delicious. The price is coffeeshop price i.e. the plate of char siew and roast belly pork is S$3 and so is the bowl of dumpling soup.
Nasi Padang Zion Road.
Heard so much about this Nasi Padang at Zion Road but it failed to satisfy our taste buds. The food is quite cheap( all in the pics cost S$14.00)but tasted average.
It was a disappointment for us yesterday when we visited the stall.

Killiney Road Kopitiam.
I've heard about the bad service from this outlet but didn't believed it was that bad until I've experienced it myself.
The staff were very rude and sarcastic to their customers,I noticed. For my friends and I,we were also appalled at the staff rudeness toward us.
When we ordered our toasts, dessert, nasi lemak and coffee, which was expensive ( same coffee cost 30 cents less per cup at the corner coffee shop and was as good if not better),the waitress pulled on a long face as if to tell us we were ordering too many items. One of the waitresses, a middle age woman, was even sarcastic, telling us we must be starving.
Another waiter pretended to be "blind" when we beckoned him for more food orders. While we were hurrying, deciding what to order, the mid aged waitress, showed impatience and asked us to hurry up.
The food was not fantastic and they were highly priced. I would not recommend anyone patronising that shop.

Cheap & Good Char Kway Teow

This is one of the best Char Kway Teow in Singapore. It is cheap and good. One plate of CKT cost S$2 but I won't know if the price has increased recently because of the hike in GST. Go and try and let me know how is it.The address is :
Outram Park Fried Kway Teow
Blk 531 A Upper Cross St.,
#02-18 Hong Lim Market & Food Centre
Upper Thomson Longhouse Nasi Briyani and C&G curry at Revenue House
Papad Pickle & Curries serves Nasi Briyani at $4.50 I was told was one of the best.It comes in 3 flavours, namely Chicken,Fish and Mutton. Go during off peak period or else you have to wait quite long to get your Briyani.
For real authentic southern Indian curry,I prefer the one at Revenue House, opposite Novena MRT station. It caters mainly to the office staff and at $4 your can have a yummy time. The food is better than Apollo Banana Leave which is incredibly expensive and sub standard. We spent almost $40 for a small fish head curry and a small dish of chicken (for 2 paxs). The fish head meat was not fresh and broke into bits when we used our spoons on it. When we feedback to the staff, they gave us a cynical smile as if to say "no thanks for the feedback".

Very good Bah Chor mee and fish ball.
Visit Thomson Plaza at Thomson Road and there is a stall at the foodcourt selling very good and yummy Bah Chor Mee as well as fish balls.A bowl of Bar Chor Mee cost $3.50 but it's worth it! When you "tar pow" or take away, there is a 20 cents extra charge for the plastic container which I think is ridiculous (most stalls do not charge for this item).
The foodcourt is at the ground level and is a pleasant place to dine. The lunch time crowd is not very big though and you would have ample space to sit around with your friends. The place is clean.
The Chicken rice,a few stalls away is quite good but too expensive. An average size white chicken cost $27. The rice portion is not generous.
